Visit EqualdexBack in 1929, this New York City site originally served as a restaurant-slash-speakeasy, founded by the trailblazing Frenchwoman Marie DuMont. And you know what? The "Crisis" in the name is a nod to the fact that Thomas Paine, the guy behind "The American Crisis" pamphlet, actually passed away on this very site back in 1809. Talk about intriguing connections!
The current building dates all the way back to 1839, and let's just say it's seen some real adventures—from being a boarding house to, ahem, a brothel.
Today, Marie's Crisis Cafe is a rockin' acoustic piano bar that's all about showtunes and sing-alongs. Every night, talented pianists take center stage, fearlessly belting out Broadway hits while guests join in the joyful chorus.
As you step inside, you'll notice some seriously cool details. The etched glass mural behind the bar is a piece of art commissioned by Marie herself to honor Thomas Paine's legacy. It's a glorious mash-up of the American Revolution on one side and the French Revolution on the other.
If you're a musical theater enthusiast (or just love some drunken sing-a-longs), Marie's Crisis Cafe is your paradise. They've got Broadway and sing-a-long nights that'll leave you tapping your feet and singing your heart out. But here's a hot tip – make sure you arrive before 9 pm on the weekends, or you might find yourself waiting in line forever. Trust us, it's worth the effort!
Marie's Crisis Cafe has a two-drink minimum per person, and hey, it doesn't have to be alcohol if that's not your cup of tea. They've got sodas and juices on hand to keep you refreshed and ready to sing your heart out.
Oh, and a little heads up – cash is king at this joint, so make sure you've got some on hand.
So there you have it, folks! If you're looking to bask in the glory of Broadway tunes, revel in a historical hotspot, and have a gay old time, Marie's Crisis Cafe is the place to be in the fabulous West Village of NYC. Now go out there, sing your heart out, and let the good times roll!
