What is the Story Behind 9th Avenue Saloon?
As one of the oldest original LGBTQ+ bars in Hell’s Kitchen and the Theater District, 9th Avenue Saloon has been a staple in the community for over four decades. The bar is gay owned and operated, and has survived through the ups and downs of the LGBTQ+ rights movement.
In March 2020, the bar was forced to shut down due to the pandemic, but after extensive repairs and renovations, it reopened in 2022 with a fresh new look and feel. Think rich woodwork that’s almost as charming as the stories it holds, TVs, a state-of-the-art sound system, and bathrooms that pay homage to Tom of Finland.
