Magnolia Bar or Mag Bar is a divey, grunge bar that has been serving the LGBTQ+ crowd in Louisville since the 1960s. It’s a small, no-frills, down-to-earth bar where you can grab a beer and hang with like-minded folks.
Location
Found in the historic Old Louisville, Magnolia Bar or Mag Bar is a small, neighborhood watering hole. Old Louisville has the largest collection of restored Victorian homes in the country and is the third largest Historic Preservation District in the U.S. Amid the architecture of this community, you’ll also find quaint bed and breakfast inns and unique dining options surrounded by the beauty of mature magnolia and oak trees.
When To Go
Magnolia Bar’s doors are open every day of the week until 4 a.m. but if you’re looking to go when there’s a crowd, Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest. If you prefer a more chill atmosphere, then stop by during the week and hang with some of the loyal LGBTQ+ customers who also frequent the bar. If you’re looking for a little grub, head over on Tuesdays for “Pints & Slices” where you can buy a pint of beer and get a free slice of pizza from Pizza Donisi located next to the bar.

The History of Magnolia Bar
Known by locals as Mag Bar, this no-frills bar has been a staple in Louisville since 1962. This resilient bar has survived not one, but two car crashes, hence the local term “MagBarred", which refers to the number of times Magnolia Bar has had vehicles hit their property. But, it’s always lived another day and opened its doors as soon as possible for its customers. While it was not always a staple of the Louisville LGBTQ+ scene, Mag Bar has grown over time and is now a more inclusive and safe space for our community.
Top Reasons to Go
Cold drinks and nice bar food? Yes and yes. If you're expecting a mixologist and pumping dance floor, this is not the spot for you. Instead, you can expect live music - local and otherwise - and a small, but engaged crowd. Magnolia Bar also has a jukebox on the days and nights when there are no live performances, so you can sit back in one of the booths and relax to one of your favorite songs.
With its vintage, eclectic decor - think cymbal-banging monkey and fishnet-clad mannequin legs - and intimate setting, it's a great place to hang out, hear some music, and have a beer. And, if you are a beer lover, Magnolia Bar have you covered. Their large selection is front and center on large chalkboards, so that you have no trouble checking out the specials.
You can also make use of their outdoor patio (when it is not freezing titties), which contains cafeteria-style wooden benches, great for sparking up conversation with the local LGBTQ+ community or other like-minded travelers. You can also try your hand at one of their old-school arcade games for some friendly competition!
