Visit EqualdexDowntown is packed on weekends, when crowds turn out to watch the University of Louisville’s Cardinals college sports games. And we do mean out! The downtown area, especially Highlands, the NuLu/East Market district, and Old Louisville near the university campus, is visibly proud and welcoming. Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky, and it hosts some of the best gay clubs for dancing and drinking, and for their famous drag shows. If you’d prefer something more low-key, find karaoke and live music at one of Louisville’s gay bars. The community dive bars are particularly popular with the bear and leather subcultures. The atmosphere around town and in its bars is unpretentious…. with the exception of the Kentucky Derby (horse races) and festival, of course!
If you’re around in the lead up to the first weekend in May, you can’t miss the Kentucky Derby and Derby Festival. The titular race lasts just two thrilling minutes—like some exes—but it’s surrounded with extravagant and delightful traditions, meaning dapper fashion and drinks galore! Quench your thirst with a classic mint julep, a sweet cocktail made with mint and Kentucky’s famous bourbon whiskey at some of the nearby gay bars. In the lead up to the race, the Derby Festival’s all-ages attractions, including air shows, fireworks, parades, hot-air balloon races, and steamboat races, will jockey for your attention.
You won’t be stuck in the stands in Louisville! The city has a world-class indoor go-kart track, and it’s not your typical, family-fun circuit: the karts are fast and the turns are sharp, making karting a great date activity if you can keep your cool while crashing into a barricade of used tires. If karting isn’t your speed, visit the Louisville Mega Cavern, popular with locals and tourists year-round, whether as a reprieve from the summertime heat or for its December “Lights Under Louisville” display. Thrill-seekers will love careening down the world’s only fully-underground zip line. Keen on a different kind of underground rock? You’ll be surprised by Louisville’s active indie music scene. Plus, there are tons of queer and gay bars to check out around the city while exploring. Thanks to its downtown neighborhoods’ youthful feel and its year-round calendar of activities, including Pride in September, Louisville is off to the races!
