Dallas isn’t just cowboy boots and barbecue—this sprawling metropolis is a progressive haven for LGBTQ+ folks deep in the heart of Texas. With a rich history of activism, a booming queer nightlife scene, and strong community support, Dallas is one of the most welcoming cities in the Southwest United States for LGBTQ+ travelers and residents alike.

Dallas’ LGBTQ+ Neighborhoods

Affectionately known as "The Strip," Cedar Springs Road in Oak Lawn is Dallas’ undeniable LGBTQ+ epicenter. This is where you will find the majority of queer bars, gay clubs, and other LGBTQ+ spots.

The Strip (Cedar Springs Road and Oak Lawn)

  • The heart of the city’s queer scene, features iconic Dallas gay bars, inclusive restaurants, drag performances, and community hubs.

Bishop Arts District & Deep Ellum

  • These areas are straight areas mixed with the LGBTQ+ community and have a thriving queer presence, with inclusive venues, artsy cafés, and alternative nightlife spots.

Safety for LGBTQ+ Folx in Dallas

Dallas is one of the most progressive cities in Texas when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, but as with any major city, safety can vary greatly by neighborhood.

Dallas

  • Oak Lawn & The Strip – These areas are generally safe and extremely LGBTQ+-friendly, with a strong community presence and plenty of queer-owned businesses.
  • Downtown & Uptown – Generally inclusive, though it’s always good to stay aware in late-night settings, especially if intoxicated or when alone.

Texas

  • Texas Laws & Protections – Texas as a whole has room for improvement in LGBTQ+ protections, and has some of the worst laws in the United States for the LGBTQ+ community, especially the trans community. Equaldex ranks Texas 43rd out of 50 for safety and LGBTQ+ issues.

Dallas, however, stands out as a progressive hub, with non-discrimination ordinances in place and a strong queer advocacy presence, but stay in groups and be aware of your surroundings at night when going out of the gayborhood. Other major progressive cities around Texas include Austin, El Paso, Houston, and San Antonio.
