Stepping into HYC is like entering a kaleidoscope of colors, laughter, and unapologetic self-expression. Established back in 2000, this was the pioneer drop-in and recreational center for LGBTQ+ youth in all of San Diego County – the OG trailblazers, if you will! With every passing year, the Center has only grown stronger, its rainbow roots firmly planted to support the blossoming identities of each and every visitor.
The heartwarming vibe at HYC is just as infectious as a viral dance challenge on social media – but worry not, it's all for the right reasons! As you stroll through the doors, you'll instantly sense the palpable warmth and openness, as if the place itself is hugging you tightly, whispering, "You're home, darling!"
Not content with just one extraordinary hub, HYC spread its magic even further – in 2019, they waved their fabulous wand and conjured up the South Bay Youth Center (SBYC) in charming Chula Vista. Now, the enchantment reaches far and wide, bridging communities and uniting families in a celebration of diversity.
Both centers are like a treasure trove of resources and opportunities, designed exclusively for LGBTQ+ and nonbinary youth, as well as for the brave souls navigating life with HIV. At HYC and SBYC, nobody is ever alone in their journey – the support system here is as tight-knit as the fiercest girl gang at a drag show.
From mental health counseling to educational workshops on intersectionality, from dazzling social events to spirited advocacy programs, HYC and SBYC cater to every need with a flair that's positively unmatched. They've got their fingers on the pulse of what the youth crave – a place to be themselves, to explore, to learn, and most importantly, to have a blast while doing it!
