A Little Background History

Friends of George’s traces its origins back to the historic George’s Disco, which first opened its doors in 1969 in Memphis. Through various incarnations, it became an iconic haven for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies, eventually closing its doors in the late 1980s. Friends of George’s was born out of a desire to commemorate this heritage and continue its legacy.

The journey began with George’s Reunion, a sensational event that united over 1,200 individuals to celebrate the iconic George's Disco. This reunion ignited a spark that led to the realization that there was a need for something beyond bars and nightclubs. Friends of George’s became the answer, delivering fresh entertainment alternatives that are rooted in the traditions of George's Disco – as they call it, a true "Showplace of the South."
