Visit EqualdexMotor City Pride in Detroit has a rich history that dates back to the late 1960s, when a group of brave individuals stood up against discrimination and police brutality during the Stonewall riots in New York City. Their activism sparked a movement that spread across the country, including Detroit, where the first official gay pride was held in 1972.
The mainstay of the Pride weekend Detroit festivities will be held at Hart Plaza during the day with live performances, entertainment, beer gardens, food trucks and lots of fun! At night the celebrations will continue around the north part of downtown on main streets - McNichols, 7 Mile, 8 Mile or 9 Mile Roads, and along Woodward Avenue. Make sure to don your favorite rainbow garments and show off your inner rainbow magic! Festival gates close one hour before closing time.
Sunday kicks off the events with the parade at noon. The Pride Parade and staging area begins at Griswold and Fort Streets, then will continue down Griswold, turn on to Jefferson Avenue, then turn into Hart Plaza. Afterwards, the festivities will continue in the plaza and around the area and finish off the night at the local LGBTQ+ spots around the north area of downtown.
Since then, Motor City Pride has grown in both size and significance, becoming a symbol of hope and solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. Every year, people from all walks of life come together to celebrate their identities and stand up for their rights, making it one of the largest and most vibrant pride events in the Midwest of the United States.
Motor City Pride is more than just a parade and a party - it's also a platform for education, advocacy, and social justice. The event features a diverse lineup of speakers, performers, and activists, who share their stories and insights on issues such as LGBTQ+ rights, HIV/AIDS awareness, and mental health. There are also booths and exhibits from local and national organizations, providing resources and information on everything from legal services to healthcare.
Of course, Motor City Pride wouldn't be complete without its famous parade, which takes over the streets of downtown Detroit with a colorful procession of floats, music, and costumes. From drag performers to leather daddies, families, allies, and everyone in our community is welcome to join the march and show their support for LGBTQ+ rights. The parade culminates in Hart Plaza, where the party continues after with live music, food, and drinks.
So if you're looking for a fun and meaningful way to celebrate pride, come join the festivities in Detroit! Whether you're a seasoned activist or a curious newcomer, you'll find a welcoming community and a chance to show off your magnificent pride.
