Visit EqualdexAmsterdam King's Day in Amsterdam promises to be an absolutely fabulous celebration fit for royalty! This annual holiday, which falls on April 27th, is a day of merrymaking, feasting, and partying in honor of King Willem-Alexander's birthday.
As the sun rises on this momentous day, the streets of Amsterdam will come alive with a kaleidoscope of color as the Dutch don their orange attire, the official color of King's Day. From head to toe, the city will be awash in a sea of bright orange clothing, hats, wigs, and accessories as revelers take to the streets to celebrate the birthday of their beloved king.
The festivities will begin early in the morning with the traditional "vrijmarkt" or "free market," where citizens of all ages set up shop along the sidewalks, selling everything from homemade crafts to secondhand goods. The streets will be lined with colorful stalls and eager buyers as everyone tries to find the perfect bargain.
As the day wears on, the city will become a veritable playground for adults and children alike, with all kinds of activities and events taking place throughout the city. There will be live music, street performers, food vendors, and carnival rides to entertain the crowds, as well as more traditional Dutch games like "koekhappen" (trying to eat a cookie on a string without using your hands) and "spijkerpoepen" (trying to drop a nail into a bottle using only your rear end).
Of course, no King's Day celebration would be complete without a good old-fashioned party, and Amsterdam is famous for throwing some of the wildest parties in Europe. From the "Orangeplein" in the city center to the bars and clubs along the canals, there will be no shortage of places to dance, drink, and celebrate well into the night.
But it's not just about the partying and the fun - King's Day is also a day of national pride and unity, and a chance for the Dutch to come together and celebrate their country and culture. So whether you're a local or a visitor, put on your best orange outfit, grab a stroopwafel or two, and join in the festivities - because on King's Day, everyone is welcome to be a king or queen for the day!
