Kansai Queer Film Festival Details

This festival showcases independent filmmakers who use film to educate and empower Japan's growing LGBTQ+ community. A unique opportunity to see narratives that represent all genders and sexualities, so there is something for everybody to enjoy! Dates vary depending on the film, so check their website or Facebook for specific details. If you enjoy film and LGBTQ+ themes, you won't want to miss the Kansai Queer Film Festival in Osaka and Kyoto.

The 2023 Kansai Queer Film Festival will be held in Osaka from September 15th to 18th and then in Kyoto from September 22nd - 24th. (Awaiting 2024 dates).

Popular Osaka Gay Bars

Dōyama is the gay area in Osaka with Block 16 is packed with bars and clubs, with some of the best Osaka gay bars, usually packed with patrons until 4 or 5 am! A favorite among locals and visitors alike is Grand Slam, a colorful and gaudy bar where everyone eventually ends up late night. It’s the perfect spot to bump into new friends and local regulars, and well known for their karaoke nights. Just around the corner is EXPLOSION, a small but lively club that hosts frequent themed gay events, ensuring a party atmosphere almost every weekend. From go-go dancers to drag shows and dance parties, it is the ideal place for any party animal. Visit their Facebook for details on upcoming events. Crowds are usually a mix of the LGBTQ+ community.

For those looking for a more relaxed vibe where conversation is possible, Ducks! Osaka is a go-to. Owned by a go-go boy who’s always in character, this gay bar offers a laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for chatting and socializing with other queer locals and tourists. Other popular gay haunts include J’s Osaka, known for its younger staff and the drinks here are a lot more affordable than some of the neighboring bars. A welcome space for visitors and it's a great place to meet new people. Yuntaku, a favorite among the older, bear and cub crowds. Popular for their karaoke, and the bar offers light snacks and there's always music on hand should you want to liven things up. Crowds are largely gay/bisexual men in their early 30s to 40s+. Take your pick and enjoy Osaka!
