Explore the progress of LGBTQ+ rights across the world all in an easy to read charts, graphs, and tables. From public sentiment to protections find it all here so you know when holding hands gets you a look or a sentence.
Visit EqualdexStart your trip in the West End’s Davie Village—its rosy-hued bus shelters and rainbow crosswalks should give you a feel for the demographics! Don’t expect pinkwashing, though. Join Forbidden Vancouver’s Really Gay History Walking Tour exploring and celebrating the city’s LGBTQ2+ history. (Curious about the 2? It stands for two-spirit, an Indigenous North American identity.) There are additional tour dates during the Vancouver Pride Society’s parade and festivals in late July. Along Davie Street, keep an eye out for Little Sister’s Book and Art Emporium. Little Sister’s tussled with the Canadian Border Services Agency over the indie bookstore’s erotica, but the shop is now recognized with a Queer Heritage plaque from the city of Vancouver. Make a toast to progress (or as a prelude to undress?) at one of Davie Street’s watering holes, where you’ll find pubs serving draft beer and chic clubs favoring cocktails. Check out the top-rated Vancouver gay bars while roaming around - Score on Davie, 1181, and Fountainhead Pub. While you’re in the West End, visit English Bay, an urban beach, and Stanley Park, with its joggable seawall.
Commercial Drive, otherwise known as The Drive, is a hub for Vancouver’s lesbian community. Women who love women and coffee will dig The Drive’s coffee shops and roasteries. Ladies, get your caffeine buzz on and come hither in September! BOLDFest, which celebrates middle-aged and older (45+) lesbians and dykes, happens in September, along with the Vancouver Dyke March, which kicks off at McSpadden Park. All year, craft beer enthusiasts will find a heady mix—and a not-too-heady pint!—of breweries around Commercial Drive and on Granville Island south of the West End. Grab a bite at the Granville Public Market, and feast your eyes on the performing and visual arts the Island proudly displays. Not sure how to get to Granville Island? Ditch the rideshare and grab a water taxi from the West End or around downtown Vancouver!
For the nature-driven spirit, a trip to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park offers a thrilling walk among the treetops of a lush rainforest. The less frequented Lynn Canyon Park, with its own suspension bridge, promises a more serene commune with nature, where the rush of waterfalls and the quiet of deep green forests can truly be savored.
Love a good event? Canucks (Canadians, and Vancouver’s NHL ice hockey team!) would say that Vancouver’s fall and winter weather is mild, if rainy, but the jetset might disagree. Cross Vancouver Harbor or take the Lions Gate Bridge to the North Shore for snowboarding and skiing at Grouse Mountain and Cypress Mountain. Head 77mi (125km) north to Whistler Blackcomb, a top-notch ski resort in the North American Pacific Coast Mountains. Microsoft codenamed Windows XP “Whistler” after this resort… but you’ll go hard at Whistler Pride and Ski Festival in January! Come springtime, Vancouver is awash in cherry blossoms. They’re like Mother Nature’s glitterbomb—fabulous, but messy! Expect dazzling Lunar New Year celebrations, including lion and dragon dances, at the Vancouver Chinatown Spring Festival. Summer days call for celebrations of creativity, like the Queer Arts Festival and the Vancouver Queer Film Festival. Vancouver has plenty of Canuck charm to draw you in year-round.
This Canadian favorite has a dynamic blend of culture, community, and stunning natural landscapes, promising a travel experience that’s as enriching as it is exhilarating. For every visitor, especially those from the LGBTQ+ community, Vancouver offers a warm welcome and an invitation to explore all the facets of its unique and spirited charm.
