Visit EqualdexUnlike many European cities, Dresden’s Neustadt (New Town) on the Elbe’s north side is an abode for all that’s creative and alternative, so expect lots of art galleries alongside its nightlife offerings. Äußere Neustadt (Outer New Town) hosts many of the hottest Dresden gay bars and clubs. Forget that stereotype about Germans and beer—craft cocktails are the standard here, reflecting Dresden’s reputation as a city of artisans. Of course, there’s also beer!
We mentioned that Neustadt is a little bit buzzier than other European cities’ new towns. Much of Dresden’s Altstadt (Old Town) on the Elbe’s south bank was destroyed by Allied bombings as World War II ended. Altstadt was reconstructed during the 20th century in its former Baroque architectural glory. Frauenkirche Dresden and Dresdner Zwinger are two splendidly-restored 18th century structures. For another example of Dresden’s history, look to the Striezelmarkt. Meant as a one-day market in 1434, the Striezelmarkt is the oldest of Germany’s Christmas markets, and the birthplace of stollen. If you’re here in late November to late December, you won’t want to miss this delightful holiday tradition!
For a bit of local history, visit Lili Elbe’s grave at Trinitatisfriedhof (Trinitatis Cemetery). Elbe, an artist, stayed in Dresden and Berlin for gender-confirming surgery. If you’re in Dresden during late August, you’ll be just in time for CSD Dresden, the city’s Christopher Street Day pride celebrations at Alaunplatz (Alaun Park) in Äußere Neustadt. Whether you’re here for its history or modernity, Dresden won’t disappoint you.
