Visit EqualdexBeing one of the largest cities in the state, Wichita is a relatively tolerant city. Queer couples are unlikely to face outright hostility, however public displays of affection in the more suburban areas of Wichita may draw attention. In the more central areas of Wichita (Downtown, Riverside, Douglas Design District, Delano), holding hands or other public displays are unlikely to garner a second glance. We still recommend being aware of your surroundings though as in any big city.
Start your adventure in the colorful and pulsating heartbeat of Wichita's LGBTQ+ scene, Douglas Avenue. Here you will find some of the best gay bars, local cafes, unique boutiques, and other fun places to check out. Don't miss out on the chance to experience a local drag show or pop into one of the friendly bars to make some new friends who can share their own Wichita tales.
This historic heart of Wichita is more than just a throwback to the Wild West; it's a lively hub where the past meets the present. Old Town Wichita is unmissable, and so is its LGBTQ+ presence! The district’s raucous clubs and low-key watering holes each attract a mixed crowd, so you should have no problem fitting in. The historic Orpheum Theater, done up in a late 19th-century style, is a splendid setting for lively drag performances. Further afield, you’ll find lesbian-focused bars and late-night dancehalls, so keep your rideshare app ready!
In the am, you’ll see that Wichita is a major cultural centre of Kansas. Old Town has a fancy-pants vibe thanks to its craft distilleries and cigar bars. The district hosts campy performing arts venues and a community-based visual arts center. Cross the Little Arkansas River to reach the Wichita Art Museum, which is the largest in the state and a particular favorite for families. If you love modern art lover, Ulrich Museum of Art offers contemporary works that are as thought-provoking as they are breathtaking. And let's not forget the outdoor installations scattered throughout the city, where art unexpectedly pops up like daisies in spring.
If your idea of exploration involves more greenery than gallery, then Wichita will not disappoint. The Great Plains Nature Center offers a serene escape with trails that meander through native prairies, wetlands, and woodlands to explore. Another great spot for nature lovers, the Botanica Wichita is a botanical paradise that showcases themed gardens, including a mesmerizing butterfly house that feels like stepping into a living wonderland. Then journey to Sedgwick County Park for even more serene escapes from the hustle and bustle of Wichita.
Adventure-seekers should set their sights on the Arkansas River Path, a scenic route that invites you to bike or jog while taking in picturesque views of the river and the city skyline. It's the perfect way to work up an appetite for Wichita's diverse culinary scene, which boasts everything from mouthwatering barbecue to Bierock (dough pastry pocket sandwich with savory filling!) and some delicious homemade chili.
So, gear up for an expedition to America's heartland of "Cowtown", and immerse yourself in the delightful surprises that dot this unlikely LGBTQ+ destination. If, unlike Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, you have a feeling that you are in Kansas, head to Wichita!
