Specifically, it's the capital of Latvia, set on the Baltic Sea in northern Europe. Riga’s city center is an architectural delight, with the most Art Nouveau/Jugendstil buildings per capita, and with a distinctly Latvian take on these pan-European and German architecture movements. If you like it grandiose, visit Alberta iela (Alberta Street) for an array of Art Nouveau buildings and the Riga Art Nouveau Centre museum itself!

Within the city center, Vecrīga (Old Town) has magnificent architecture, from the medieval to the Modernist, lining its cobblestone streets. Trust our word on it, along with UNESCO’s, who named Vecrīga a World Heritage site. Here, the House of the Blackheads stands as a testament to Riga’s merchant past, its facade as flamboyant as a drag queen at a pride parade. Not far away, are the spires of St. Peter's Church, a 13th-century Gothic cathedral with the city’s tallest spire—any day except Monday, you can climb the tower for stunning panoramas of the city! These panoramic views of the city may just steal your breath faster than a glance from a Baltic beauty. Visit Trīs Brāļi (Three Brothers), Riga’s oldest houses. One of these medieval buildings now houses a museum.

Art enthusiasts and architecture enthusiasts will find their paradise exploring Alberta iela, a street so full of art nouveau buildings it feels like walking through an open-air museum. The facades here are adorned with flamboyant figures and intricate designs that echo the city's love for drama and flair. It’s as if the buildings themselves are voguing for your attention, each more fabulous than the last. Latvian National Opera and Ballet is a gorgeous 19th-century building. Take in classical opera and ballet, along with contemporary performances, at this venue straddling the parkland along the Pilsētas Kanāls (city canal). The nearby Pulkstenis Laima (Laima clock) is a popular meeting spot in Riga, so catch up here before you hit the town! Beer drinkers will delight in Vecrīga’s LGBTQ+ friendly pubs, while the city center hosts a club and a couple of gay saunas that make the perfect warmers on a brisk Baltic night!

For those who seek the solace of nature without straying far from the city’s heartbeat, the Bastejkalna Parks offers a green sanctuary to explore. Cross the iconic Freedom Monument—a symbol of Latvia’s independence and resilience—and find yourself amidst serene paths, romantic bridges, and the gentle caress of the canal's waters. It’s the perfect backdrop for a love story, or perhaps, to pen your own.

No visit to Riga is complete without immersing yourself in the local cuisine and vibrant nightlife. The Central Market, housed in giant Zeppelin hangars, offers a cornucopia of Latvian delicacies, from smoked fish to the darkest rye bread you’ll ever fall in love with.

Beyond the city, Jurmala Beach stretches along the Gulf of Riga, offering a scenic escape with its white sandy beaches and therapeutic air. It’s a popular spot for both locals and visitors to unwind, soak in the sun, and let the Baltic Sea's waves wash away their worries.

What about events you say? Baltic Pride began in Riga, and the city takes turns with the other Baltic capitals (Tallinn, Estonia, and Vilnius, Lithuania) to host the festival in early June. If you want extra deets on Riga’s LGBTQ+ community, or if you need support, contact the city’s own LGBT House. We’re confident you’ll be the architect of a memorable trip to Riga!

Riga, with its architectural grandeur, rich history, and embrace of the LGBTQ+ community, stands as a beacon of tolerance and beauty in the Baltic region. It’s a city that doesn’t just welcome you; it invites you to find a piece of yourself among its winding streets and spirited nights. Whether you’re searching for a historical journey, an artistic pilgrimage, or a chance to celebrate, Riga promises an unforgettable adventure.
