Visit EqualdexPhuket (pronounced puu-get, with a long ‘u’ sound, so no wisecracks!) is the name of the island, as well as the province and its capital city on the southwest coast. Patong, a town on the west coast, has a lively LGBTQ+ community along Patong Beach. The Patong Beach area becomes the epicenter of LGBTQ+ nightlife, with clubs and bars offering a safe, vibrant space for everyone to express themselves freely, and dance like nobody’s watching.
Rainbow Street at Thanon Hatpatong (Hatpatong Road) begs to be photographed! Just off Thanon Bangla (Bangla Road), Soi Paradise packs a lot into a single side street: expect cozy restaurants, adorable cafés, and energetic bars whose drag performers and go-go dancers are sure to impress! As for yourself, don’t worry about dressing to impress unless you’re into that. Flip-flop sandals and tank tops are A-OK around Patong. Both of these areas have some of the best gay bars in Phuket to have a great night out.
On the Andaman Sea, Patong Beach is a crescent white sand beach dotted with palm trees. From November to April, the beach’s clear blue water is ideal for swimming. Rent a jet ski on the beach for extra thrills! The waves get harsher and muddier during the rainy season from May to October, so try your luck in the morning if you’re visiting then. The central stretch near the surf club is a well-established hangout for gay men, but everyone is welcome at Patong Beach—in general, Thai culture accepts and respects all facets of the LGBTQ+ community!

That rainy season heralds Songkran, the Thai New Year. Thailand observes Songkran on April 13, and the Water Festival celebration happens around that date, typically from April 12 – 15. Buddhists welcome the new year with a water cleansing ritual, and that ritual turns into a streetwide celebration—and a way to cool down!—around Bangla Road in Patong. Expect similar celebrations in Karon, south of Patong, where you can admire a white marble Big Buddha statue. Head to Patong in late April for Phuket Pride Week, a festival that’s popular with locals and tourists.
