Visit EqualdexOakland isn’t just San Francisco’s hip little sister; it’s an eclectic playground all its own, serving up queer culture, history, and some fantastic views in the Bay Area. Hop on BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and head east from San Francisco! Oakland’s Art Deco architecture will draw you to the Uptown neighborhood, near Chinatown and Old Oakland. The Fox Theater, a magnificent example of the area’s early 20th-century buildings, is a chic, historical spot to take in touring bands and performers. Broadway and its surroundings, a block east of the Fox Theater, has Oakland’s biggest concentration of lively LGBTQ+ watering holes. First, let’s talk neighborhoods because Oakland is a patchwork of them, each with its own flavor. Piedmont Avenue is the high street of your dreams with quirky shops and to-die-for eateries. Need a vintage kimono or a first edition book? They've got you covered. Over in the Dimond District, it’s all about the laid-back vibes and lush greenery, perfect for those seeking a little respite from the city buzz. For the gayborhood area, Oakland has designated a multi-block triangle between Grand Avenue and Lakeshore Avenue (just east of Lake Merritt) as the city’s first LGBTQ+ cultural district. Lake Merritt is historically the best place to start here! As in any big city, keep your wits about you, especially when out late. Crime rates have been rising here in certain areas of the city, so keep you and your peeps safe!
Here is our list of top gay bars and queer spots around Oakland:
An Oakland institution, White Horse Bar has been proudly serving up LGBTQ+ vibes since before most of us could spell “fabulous.” If you haven't strutted through these doors, have you really been to Oakland? With drag shows that’ll make you clutch your pearls, karaoke nights for your inner pop diva, and pool tables for the more chill (or competitive) types, this spot is the heartbeat of Oakland’s queer nightlife.
On the cozier side of things, Summer Bar & Lounge is the go-to spot for the East Bay’s LGBTQ+ scene to unwind and recharge with some killer dance beats. Whether you're vibing to live music, cheering on queens as they snatch the spotlight, or braving an open mic session to share your fabulousness with the world, Summer Bar will keep you entertained all night long.
Over at The RIC, it's like stepping into a time machine straight to 1910, but with way better cocktails and zero prohibition nonsense. Their fun-loving crew will make sure your drink is always on point while you channel your inner child with board games or throw darts (safely, we don’t need any eye-patch chic moments here). The vibe’s a mixed bag, with gay and queer events depending on the night, so do yourself a favor and stalk their socials for the latest tea.
Fluid510 is a LGBTQ+ lounge and restaurant with delectable libations, great happy hour options, and loads of amazing fun! Crowd is usually 30s and up, looking to bask in relaxed but fun vibes while drinking cocktails. Great ambiance and newly renovated for a more upscale setting.
And if you’re looking to add some Latin flair to your night, look no further than Qué Rico, the Latin gay club spicing up the Bay Area! With karaoke to bring out your diva, go-go boys working the crowd, and live performances that’ll keep you dancing, Qué Rico promises a week packed with fiery fun. So, clear your schedule, because once you step inside, Oakland's LGBTQ+ nightlife will have you hooked!
Oakland’s community is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse in the United States. Pick and choose from what the city’s got. The Oakland Museum of California is a good place to get a feel for the city’s and state’s history. Head north from Chinatown around Lake Merritt to visit the volunteer-run Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt. In the afternoon, the surrounding streets are designated Slow Streets for pedestrians’ and cyclists’ safety, so you won’t be dodging traffic. If you’re a fitness fan, check out the East Bay Front Runners, an LGBTQ+ running and walking group who organize a pride run in October.
But what about nature, you ask? Well, for a real escape, head up to the Redwood Regional Park. It’s like stepping into another world—one where ancient redwoods soar to the sky and the air smells like eucalyptus and adventure. And for those panoramic city views, make your way to the Oakland Hills. Bring a picnic, grab a spot, and watch the sunset paint the sky shades of orange and pink.
Let's not overlook Jack London Square, where the waterfront comes alive with farmers markets, outdoor movies, and canoeing on the estuary. It’s named after the adventurous author Jack London, so you know it’s got stories to tell. Plus, it's a stone's throw from some of the city's best dining spots. Sip on a craft cocktail while you gaze at the boats bobbing on the water—talk about living the dock life!
So, if you thought Oakland was just a stopover on the way to somewhere else, think again. It's a city with heart, spunk, and soul, ready to wrap you in a warm, inclusive embrace. With its thriving LGBTQ+ community, and breathtaking natural beauty, Oakland invites you to come and make some memories (just be safe!). Bring your most colorful queer self, and you’ll fit right in!
