Visit EqualdexBut Midwestern folks are practically friendly to a fault, and Milwaukee, the state’s largest city, offers visitors a heady brew of nightlife, culture, and nature. Milwaukee is nicknamed Brew City for a reason—cheap and tasty beer overflows here, owing to the city’s German heritage, and it pairs deliciously with Wisconsin’s famous squeaky cheese curds. You’ll find sports bars with a laid-back dive atmosphere around the city’s compact downtown area. The centrally-located Walker’s Point neighborhood, now a hub for the LGBTQ+ community, (with some of the best Milwaukee gay bars) has turned its disused warehouses into craft breweries and dance clubs. Walker’s Point has venues that are especially popular with lesbians, members of the leather subculture, and Packers fans (we mean fans of the American football team!).
Start your adventure in the heart of the city, where the Milwaukee Art Museum not only captivates with its world-class collection but also with its stunning architectural design. The museum is nationally famous for its distinctive, Santiago Calatrava-designed architecture, and it houses works by Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso. You’ll want to pay special attention to the paintings by Georgia O’Keeffe, who was born in Wisconsin and is known as the mother of American modernism. Her detailed flower paintings tend towards the yonic (that is, they look a little or a lot like vulvas). If classic motorcycles and leather rev your engine, head to Harbor View, just north of Walker’s Point, to the Harley-Davidson Museum, which displays one of Elvis Presley’s motorcycles. You’ll be feeling All Shook Up after a day out in Milwaukee!
For those who cherish the outdoors, Milwaukee doesn't disappoint. The city's extensive park system is its green crown, with Lakefront Park being the jewel. Here, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the lake, partake in vibrant festivals, or simply sit back and watch the sailboats glide by. The Oak Leaf Trail offers an immersive nature experience right in the city’s backyard, perfect for biking, walking, sitting and enjoying the trees or just rollerblading through scenic landscapes.
And let’s not forget the culinary journey that awaits for you food lovers! From farm-to-table delicacies that tantalize your taste buds to the iconic Milwaukee fish fry, the city’s food scene will have your tummies happy. For the beer aficionados, a pilgrimage to some of Milwaukee’s renowned breweries is a must, where you can sip on a rich history of brewing excellence.
If you’re visiting during the summer, take in the crisp Midwestern air with a walk on the Lakefront Trail overlooking Milwaukee Bay on Lake Michigan. Milwaukee Bay provides a magnificent backdrop for the lively PrideFest in June, which is the world’s largest pride festival with dedicated grounds. Milwaukee isn’t without a rowdy and diverse club scene at any time of year, even as the city’s abundance of nature promises an escape from metropolitan hustle and bustle.
Milwaukee is a city that dances to its own rhythm, where the warmth of its people rivals that of its summer festivals. It’s a place where every visitor becomes part of the tapestry, every street corner has a story, and every sunset over Lake Michigan is a reminder of the beauty in diversity.
