Hong Kong, where skyscrapers reach the heavens and the city's pulse races with the energy of a dragon! This vibrant metropolis is not just a powerhouse of culture and finance. The diverse city landscape includes one of the largest number of skyscrapers around the globe, plus Hong Kong is full of fantastic destinations with small islands to explore, beaches to sunbathe, historical sites, and beautiful nature spots to experience. Do note that Hong Kong was a British Colony until 1997, so it has a lot of contrasts to mainland China with more Western and European values. Compared to some areas in Asia, Hong Kong has a more open LGBTQ+ community with a variety of gay bars and LGBTQ+ events. Just remember Hong Kong is still more conservative than most other major cities in North America and Europe.

Our Top Hong Kong LGBTQ+ Travel Recommendations

The city’s distinctive LGBTQ+ scene has a few different centers after dark, including Hong Kong Island’s Central area (particularly the ex-pat nightlife hub of Lan Kwai Fong) and Causeway Bay, as well as Tsim Sha Tsui in southern Kowloon (the peninsula on the other side of Victoria Harbor,) which has even more Hong Kong gay bars! Here is our list of favorite LGBTQ+ spots around Hong Kong.

FLM is located on Jervois Street and is usually the gay bar that is fairly busy during the weekdays. You can hit the dance floor early and catch their fabulous happy hour from 7 to 9 pm, featuring 2-for-1 cocktails, with a mix of LGBTQ+ locals and international tourists.

Zoo is your go-to for a stylish night out with a range of hand-crafted sophisticated and tropical cocktails. The fun-loving gay crowd makes weekends here electric. Don't miss the daily happy hour, where you can indulge in delightful drinks and trendy atmosphere.

WINK is a hot spot for bisexual and gay guys in their 20s and 30s, along with other members of the LGBTQ+ community. Enjoy exclusive cocktails in a sleek setting that’s perfect for mingling and be prepared for a crowd on weekends as the bar stays lively until 2 am.

Boo Bar is a very popular bear karaoke and gay dance spot in Kowloon, just north of Hong Kong Island, known for its crowd of bears and lovers of hair.

For the ladies, check out The Cloakroom, which is one of the newer additions to Hong Kong’s lesbian bar scene and is a speakeasy-style bar in Causeway Bay. The bar hosts events like standup comedy, live music, and karaoke nights, plus has tons of top-notch cocktails to choose from. Also try out Virus, which is recently a more gender-inclusive audience, but remains a haven for lesbian women. Enjoy karaoke, comfy couches, and tasty tapas-style plates here.

During the sun hours, get that vitamin D at Middle Bay Beach. This isn't an official gay beach, but is the top spot for gay and queer sunbathers. The bay is cozy and attracts locals and visitors looking to relax. Get a taxi or take a scenic walk from Repulse Bay to enjoy all the glory of the sun and sand.

Hong Kong LGBTQ+ events that you will want to experience - Pink Dot Hong Kong, which started in 2009, inspired by its Singaporean counterpart, to champion the LGBTQ+ community. Every year, attendees gather in West Kowloon Art Park, dressed in pink to create a striking "pink dot," symbolizing unity and support for inclusiveness and diversity. The event is a joyous blend of performances, music, activities, socials, and community spirit to celebrate love and acceptance in all its forms.

Hong Kong Pride, which has grown into an annual celebration, now held every November. The parade winds its way from Victoria Park to Edinburgh Place, where you'll find live performances, booths, and entertainment. Each year brings a unique theme and dress code, so come join the march and bask in the spirit of inclusivity and Pride!

Popular Things To Do + See in Hong Kong

Strap on your most comfortable walking shoes to explore the city and get ready to conquer the concrete jungle. Start your day with a traditional dim sum breakfast in bustling Kowloon. These bite-sized delights are as varied and colorful as our community – and twice as spicy! But there's more to Hong Kong than its glittering surface. The city is full of experiences, with tranquil temples and lush parks providing serene escapes from the urban rush.

These three areas also host plenty to see by day, including the Peak Tram to give you a list of Hong Kong’s best views, the exceptional shopping of Causeway Bay, and a majority of the city’s museums in Tsim Sha Tsui. In the evening, head to a spot with a great view of Victoria Harbor for the Symphony of Lights—the world’s largest permanent (and all-around fantastic) light show. Finally, explore the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, which is a Buddhist temple in Sha Ti home to over 12,800 Buddha statues.

Looking for a quieter experience? Escape the urban rush with a ferry ride to Lamma Island, where the pace slows and the beaches beckon. It's like stepping into a pastel-painted village from a storybook, perfect for hand-in-hand strolls and sunset selfies.

From the people to the food to the neon-bathed urban canyons, along with the best gay bars in Hong Kong, it will have you wondering what time of day it really is! Hong Kong is a one-of-a-kind experience that's waiting for you to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
