Known for its white-sand beaches and glamorous all-inclusive resorts (and Spring Break ragers), Cancún may seem a… well, heterodox or unusual destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, but there’s more to this city than meets the eye!

Its clubs and bars welcome patrons of all sorts – you’ll find a dizzying array of venues along Tulum Avenue in the Kaan-Chac neighborhood – and the city’s attractive go-go boys, open-minded locals, and fellow travelers make Cancún a gratifying vacation spot. While there aren’t many Cancun gay bars, there are some LGBT hot spots. Playa Delfines has mostly gay visitors, and, while the water is a bit rough for swimming, it's an ideal beach for surfing… or for watching shredded surfers. Let your imagination run wild at Captain Hook Barco Pirata, where customers are treated to a scrumptious dinner on the water with entertainment provided by the ship's “pirate” crew.

Follow the local crowd to Playa Del Carmen for beachside hangouts, or for scuba diving and snorkeling. These activities are the most fun you’ll have in a mask! Maybe. If you’re feeling intrepid, trek two hours inland to Chichén Itzá and marvel at the Temple of Warriors and the Temple of Kukulkan, which date from the Yucatec Maya Postclassic period. Or continue south from Playa Del Carmen, along the Riviera Maya resort strip, to Tulum, where you’ll find the picturesque ruins of a walled Maya seaport set off by the cool blue Caribbean. Bring a bathing suit for a dip in the ocean or a limestone sinkhole, called a cenote, and for a beachside rumba at sundown. Admire the region’s traditional folk dances, too – Maya culture isn’t relegated to the ruins!

If you aren’t afraid to get wet and messy, try the Underwater Museum or test your hand at a chocolate-making workshop. Whether you come to Cancún to party all weekend, experience the Yucatan Peninsula’s enduring Maya culture, or bask on its sunlit beaches, you should make this trip at least once in your life.

You may remember very little (we’re not judging) but you’ll regret nothing! Salud.
